June’s Reviews: Heart of the Emerald by Cynthia Hickey

Heart of the Emerald is a delightful historical romance. Irish immigrants Aileen Sullivan and her brother travel to the United States via an uncomfortable boat ride. The pair are on a search for Aileen’s obnoxious former suitor who wronged them back in Ireland.

Instead of having to stay at Five Points, an undesirable slum, a wealthy Englishman Samuel Westfield, who was himself an immigrant only five years before finds them more suitable quarters with the promise they will work around the place.

When Samuel falls in love with the beautiful immigrant, Aileen is true to her name, fiery and stubborn. Heart of the Emerald is a novella which kept me turning the pages and my heart rooting for these newcomers to the United States.
